Nominations are now open for two 21CD Supporter Directors to represent our members on the Aylesbury United Board, following sign-off by the 21CD Committee and confirmation of the process with the club Board.

Andy Martin and Nick Nelms currently represent 21CD as interim directors. These appointments ensured the Trust continued to have representation during the transition period, with the intention that the longer-term positions would be filled through a formal election by 21CD members.

The elected representatives will serve for a two-year term, with the intention that they take a lead in Fan Engagement and Matchday Operations. The portfolios will be agreed with the AUFC Board following appointment, taking account of experience and preference.

We’d really like members to consider putting themselves forward.

What does the role involve?

This is an active role with responsibilities beyond attending Board meetings. The successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Attend and contribute to AUFC Board meetings
  • Take an active role in their agreed area of responsibility
  • Help turn Board discussions into actions between meetings
  • Represent the views and interests of 21CD members and the wider fanbase
  • Work constructively with the other AUFC directors and volunteers
  • Accept the legal responsibilities that come with being a company director
  • Declare any actual or potential conflicts of interest

There is a real commitment involved but it’s also an opportunity to play a direct part in shaping the future of the club at an important point in its history.

Who can apply?

Candidates must:

  • Be aged 18 or over
  • Be a current, fully paid-up member of 21CD
  • Have held continuous 21CD membership for at least three months before nominations opened
  • Not be disqualified from acting as a company director
  • Be subject to the FA’s ‘Fit and Proper Person’ requirements
  • Be able to attend Board meetings and undertake the responsibilities of the role
  • Be willing to serve for the full two-year term
  • Declare any actual or potential conflicts of interest

You don’t need to have previously served on a football club board. What matters is that you understand the commitment involved, are prepared to contribute and want to represent supporters constructively.

How to apply

Please send your application to 21CD Treasurer Lee Cotton at lee@robertday.biz by 11.59pm on Monday 12 October.

Your application should include:

  • Your full name and length of 21CD membership
  • A personal statement of up to 500 words covering your relevant skills and experience, and why you would like to represent 21CD on the AUFC Board
  • Confirmation that you meet the eligibility criteria and are willing to serve for two years and act as a company director
  • Details of any actual or potential conflicts of interest

What happens next?

Applications will be checked against the eligibility criteria. If there is a large number of candidates, a shortlist may be required using published criteria.

Candidate statements will be shared with eligible 21CD members ahead of the vote. If appropriate, we will also arrange an opportunity for members to put questions to those standing.

The election will be conducted electronically. Each eligible member will be able to vote for up to two candidates, with the two candidates receiving the highest number of valid votes selected as 21CD’s proposed nominees.

Election timetable

  • Monday 12 October, 11.59pm: Nominations close
  • Tuesday 13 to Wednesday 14 October: Eligibility checks and shortlisting, if required
  • Thursday 15 October: Electronic voting opens
  • Wednesday 21 October, 11.59pm: Voting closes
  • Thursday 22 October, 7pm: The result is announced at the 21CD AGM

The AGM will be held online, with the joining link and agenda circulated closer to the time.

Lee Cotton will oversee the election process, with independent scrutiny in place to ensure it is run fairly and transparently. Any 21CD Committee member who applies will take no part in assessing applications, shortlisting candidates or administering the election.

Regardless of the election result, the proposed nominees must pass the relevant Owners’ and Directors’ Test and then be formally appointed by the AUFC Board of Directors in accordance with company law. The election therefore determines the representatives nominated by 21CD members, subject to these checks and the formal appointment process.

Could you also help 21CD?

We’re also looking for new members to join the 21CD Committee and help us continue representing supporters and supporting the club.

There are plenty of ways to get involved, including events and fundraising, communications, membership and supporter initiatives. You don’t need any particular experience or have to take on a huge workload. Any time, skills or ideas you can offer would be appreciated.

Joining the Committee is also a great way to get to know other supporters, become more involved in the club and enjoy the social side of working together on something we all care about.

If you’d like an informal conversation about standing as a Supporter Director, please contact Lee at lee@robertday.biz. For more information about joining the 21CD Committee, please reply to this email.
